Little Bankers, Big Discoveries

Hi everyone,

This past Friday, the children had a wonderful time learning about the important role bankers play in our community and exploring early financial literacy concepts. We began our discussion by asking, “What is a bank?” One thoughtful response was, “It’s where people go to get money or put it away.” We looked at a picture of the inside of a bank and talked about who the bankers might be. The children noticed details like “the lady behind the computer” and “the lady who takes the money and puts it away,” sparking a great conversation about different roles in a bank and how they help people save and manage their money.
We introduced simple ideas about saving and budgeting, helping the children begin to understand why families plan and save for important things.
To wrap up our lesson, we conducted a fun and engaging coin experiment to explore surface tension—how water molecules stick together. Each child received a coin, a dropper, and a cup of water. They made predictions about how many drops of water would fit on their coin before it spilled over, then carefully counted each drop as they conducted their experiment. The excitement grew as they tried to beat their previous numbers, with one child reaching an impressive 102 drops on the quarter! We encouraged patience, careful counting, and focus to achieve the best results.
During our closing discussion, we observed how the water formed a rounded bubble on top of the coin as more drops were added. One child noticed it looked like a little dome! The children shared their ideas about why the bubble eventually popped and enjoyed comparing their observations.
If you’d like to try this experiment at home, here are a few conversation starters to extend the learning:
“What are some things families save for?”
“How can saving help us plan for the future?”
If your child isn’t sure about an answer, that’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the topic together. We love seeing their curiosity continue at home!
