On Friday, September 7, the students at Berkeley Academy took a Hands-on Science class on The Chemistry of Smell! They learned about organic molecules and how receptors in our noses perceive different smells. For one of the activities, the students were given the task of smelling different molecules to determine what flavors they are used for in artificial food flavoring. They experienced various scents such as banana, mint, and lemon! The students then chose their favorite molecules and built tiny models of the molecular structures using gumdrops, marshmallows, and toothpicks!
